A lot of people usually visit a doctor only when they begin to feel unwell. However, this is not the right approach because many diseases are preventable and can be managed in a better way if they are identified well in advance.

What is disturbing, however, is that simple things such as unhealthy diet are among the risk factors that can be easily modified to prevent such diseases. If people seriously took up habits such as eating balanced diets, having regular exercise and avoiding harmful habits such as smoking, then the levels of deaths would be significantly lower.
It can, therefore, be seen that prevention of diseases is probably both the best method to cut down on the risk of getting diseases as well as a way of reducing the severity of illness.
What methods can be used to promote prevention of diseases?
At the individual level, regular medical check-ups are greatly encouraged. During a check-up, your doctor will be able to evaluate the overall state of your health. Regular check-ups will also provide the opportunity to detect risk factors that put you at the risk of diseases.
During your check-up session, you are advised to provide as much information as possible to your doctor; that includes information relating to the medical history of your immediate family. You are also encouraged to follow any recommendations or guidelines that your doctor may provide.
It is usually recommended that adults should have their bodies checked after a period of every two years. For individuals above the age of 40, however, the recommended interval is every year.
In the period between medical check-ups, individuals are also advised to take up healthy lifestyles, which is the best means of prevention. In this regard, the following habits are encouraged:
– Quit smoking. Secondhand smoke should also be avoided.
– Maintain your ideal weight.
– Ensure that you do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical exercise at least three times a week.
– Make sure your diet is balanced and consume enough vital nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
– Avoid excessive alcohol. It is recommended that adults should only have no more than two drinks a day and further have three days per week in which no alcohol is taken.
